ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Addresses Delegates at the XXII ANOC General Assembly

2nd November 2017: Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach today addressed delegates and the Czech Republic Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs at the XXII ANOC General Assembly in Prague. The assembly was attended by a record 1,300 delegates representing all 205 NOCs.

In his keynote address, Bach affirmed the IOC’s commitment to protecting clean athletes following anti-doping issues at Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016.

Security is a top priority and on November 13, the United Nations will discuss and hopefully approve the resolution on the Olympic Truce which commits UN member states to ensure safe passage to all athletes participating in Pyeongchang in 2018. The Truce will send a strong message to all UN member states to respect the values of the Olympic Games.

Building on the introduction of a Refugee Olympic Team at the 2016 Summer Games, the IOC has launched the Olympic Refuge Foundation together with UNHCR and supported by the NOCs of Qatar and Lichtenstein. Its mission is to create safe places for refugees and promote harmonious and integrated societies by bringing refugees and local populations together through sport.

Bach closed his address with the message that in a world of mistrust against the establishment and where selfish opinions seem to prevail and create divide, the Olympic values of respect, tolerance, understanding and peace are more important than ever and that it is the responsibility of NOC’s to promote these values together.

The General Assembly sessions will also announce the launch of an Independent Ethics Committee and share the latest on the World Beach Games in San Diego in 2019.

Footage from the ANOC Awards will be available via Digital News Agency.
