Central Saint Martins (CSM), the world's leading centre of art and design education, has partnered with GrandFest, a festival run by older people’s charity Royal Voluntary Service, to bring older people together with younger students to pass down their knowledge of heritage skills.
Now in its third successive year, GrandFest, the one day event that celebrates the craft skills of talented older people, GrandMakers, returns to East London this year. Taking place on Sunday 18th June in London, the GrandMakers, all over 70 years old, will run master classes in their preferred skill, taking over nearby restaurants, shops and museums in the Spitalfields area.
Ahead of the event, Celia, one of this year’s GrandMakers at GrandFest, hosted a master class to Textile Design students at Central Saint Martins. She passed on her method of crochet stitching to give students the confidence and skills to tackle their own projects, and discussed how crochet can be incorporated into contemporary clothing.
Students have also been given the opportunity to be part of GrandFest on Sunday 18th June, where they will be able to be part of the master classes with the GrandMakers.
