January 2017: To celebrate the launch of Matt Damon’s new highly anticipated film, The Great Wall, director Zhang Yimou explains the fascinating dynamics behind the camera in an exclusive interview.
The Great Wall is Legendary and Universal Pictures’ largest-ever production in China, which brings to life traditions, legends and culture of the Song Dynasty in a star-studded performance. The film, born from the creative genius of director Zhang Yimou, aims to display the rich Chinese heritage to the eyes of the world by exploring one of the most vibrant moments in the history of the Nation.
Zhang Yimou, who had been previously applauded internationally for directing prize-winning films such as Hero, Raise the Red Lantern and House of Flying Daggers, is now set on bridging the gap between foreign cultures and China. In this behind-the-scenes film, Mr Yimou is keen to showcase the beauty of his homeland and in particular, touches on Beijing as a unique and inspirational city where ancient and old elements intertwine within its every element. The crew, who was based in the Peninsula Beijing Hotel while filming, could experience this one of a kind interchange of old and new traditions and many foreign actors developed a fascination for the Chinese culture.
The Great Wall brings to screen a stellar cast with the best of Chinese and Hollywood talent, such as Matt Damon (The Bourne Trilogy, The Martian), Jing Tian (The Warring States, upcoming Pacific Rim: Uprising and Kong: Skull Island), Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Narcos) and Willem Dafoe (American Psycho, Spider-Man trilogy).
